Pregnancy: Acupuncture when pregnant

We often get asked can I have acupuncture when pregnant? Acupuncture, a non-intrusive intervention, is totally safe when you are pregnant. In fact, it can help with many pregnancy related issues such as sickness, heart burn, headaches, low back pain and sciatica, tiredness and also to help prepare for birth.

A young pregnant woman recently came to our clinic as she suffered from Pubic Symphysis Dysfunction (PSD). This is a pain that presents around the pubic bone and can radiate into the lower back or groin. The pain can range from a mild discomfort when walking to a severe and debilitating pain that makes walking very difficult.

What is Pubis Symphysis Dysfunction?

Normally the pubis symphysis is a stable joint but towards the later stages of pregnancy can begin to slightly separate to prepare for easier passage of the bay during birth. This separation can lead to inflammation in the pubis symphysis which causes discomfort and pain.

What can be done about it?

Often with less severe pain women will be advised to rest. If the pain is more intense women may need to use crutches for walking or use a belt to wear to help stabilise the pelvis. In severe cases bed rest or hospitalisation may be necessary.

Acupuncture helps diminish the discomfort of PSD. When PSD gets treated as soon as it starts, acupuncture can  prevent it from getting worse as the pregnancy progresses. Even when the pain has been there for some time, acupuncture can still help to reduce it.

Our patient found great relieve right from the first session. She had regular weekly sessions which helped reduce the discomfort. Acupuncture also helped her to move about without crutches, which she had been recommended to use. She just wished she had come for treatment earlier so she would have enjoyed the benefits sooner and been able to move around more easily.
