IBS: Irritable Bowel Syndrome

Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) affects 10 – 20% of the UK population at any one time. Up to 12 million people in the UK are affected by IBS at some time in their lives. Bloating, swelling, bouts of diarrhoea and/or constipation and feeling sick are just some of the symptoms which can cause misery for those affected by it.

IBS related visits to the GP, hospitalisation, absenteeism from work and depression are on the rise. In addition, medication for IBS that is on the market, readily available to everyone has lots of potential side effects. Research literature commonly suggests conventional medicine has limited scope to help.

The exact cause of IBS is unknown, so many sufferers remain undiagnosed whilst strugling to manage their symptoms.

The good news is that Acupuncture has been found to be very effective in relieving the symptoms of IBS without any risk of side effects. In Chinese medicine we indentify clearly that emotional stress in combination with diet and lifestyle are the main causes for IBS.

Acupuncture relieves IBS symptoms by reducing pain and bloating, regulating muscular movement and strenghtening of the digestive tract. It helps reduce anxiety and depression and decreases stress.

Acupuncturists look at the body as a whole and therefore also provide dietary advice to help improve digestion leaving patients feeling well nourished and energised.
